Pimple

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells; bacteria and inflammation can also contribute. Blackheads and whiteheads are called comedones, not inflammatory papules: blackheads remain open and darken through oxidation, while whiteheads stay closed. Papules are small, inflamed bumps, whereas pustules contain visible pus. Nodules form deeper beneath the skin and can be painful. These distinctions matter because a superficial clogged pore and a deep, tender lump need different approaches.

Start with gentle cleansing, a noncomedogenic moisturizer, and sunscreen rather than aggressive scrubbing. Salicylic acid can help unclog pores, while benzoyl peroxide can help reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammatory spots; introduce products gradually to limit irritation. Avoid picking or squeezing, which can worsen inflammation and increase scarring risk. If breakouts are deep, persistent, leaving scars, or affecting your confidence, a dermatologist can guide treatment. Acne is common, and struggling with it is not a personal failure.
